The name I AM is the oldest name for God. It was first used in a conversation between God and Moses at the Burning Bush found in Exodus 3:14. For God, the term I AM tells us that he is eternal, self-sufficient and depends on no one. He is the same yesterday, today and forever, and probably most important, that God is with us. He always was, he is, and he will be.
The name Yahweh is an important one. It comes from the same Hebrew root as I AM. It is God’s personal and covenant name. It is also the name given to Jesus, God’s son. In the Old Testament, I AM saw the suffering of his people in Egypt. I AM sent Moses to deliver the people and find a promised land. I AM never left his people.
Jesus further clarified the term I AM in the book of John as he made several declarations as to who I AM:
I AM the Bread of Life found in John 6:35.
I AM the Light of the World found in John 8:12.
I AM the door found in John 10:9.
I AM the Good Shepherd found in John 10:11.
I AM the Resurrection and the Life found in John 11:25.
I AM the Way, the Truth and the Life found in John 14:6.
I AM the True Vine found in John 15:1.
I AM is not just a historical character. God is with you here and now. He is not limited by time or space. He created it and is eternal and trustworthy. He is NOT dependent on us. Rather we are dependent on Him.
